Ear Wax Removal - FAQs

Got questions? We're here to help.
Below are some of the most common questions we get asked about ear wax removal at Clinic El in Dorridge.

How do I know if I need ear wax removal?

You may need ear wax removal if you're experiencing:

  • Blocked or muffled hearing

  • Earache or discomfort

  • A feeling of fullness in the ear

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

  • Dizziness or balance issues
If in doubt, we offer ear health check-ups to assess whether treatment is needed.

  •

What is microsuction and is it safe?

Microsuction is a gentle, precise method of removing ear wax using a small suction device under direct vision with a microscope.
It’s widely considered the safest and most effective technique — with no water, no mess, and minimal discomfort.

Is ear wax removal painful?

Most clients experience no pain at all — just a mild suction sound or pressure. If you have sensitive ears, we’ll take extra care and explain everything before we begin.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount and type of wax.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly through our website or by phone for a same-day or next-day appointment.

Is ear syringing still used?

Ear syringing is an outdated method and is no longer recommended by the NHS. At Clinic El, we offer water irrigation— a modern, controlled method that’s gentler and more effective.

What’s the cost of ear wax removal?

Our pricing is clear and transparent:

  • Ear health check-up: £30

  • Ear wax removal (one ear): £40

  • Ear wax removal (both ears): £60

What if I have ear pain or think I have an infection?

If you're experiencing ear pain, discharge, or believe you may have an infection, please let us know before booking. In most cases, we may recommend you visit your GP or pharmacist prior to treatment.
If that's not practical, we can still carry out a visual inspection of your ears and advise whether it's safe to proceed or if a delay is necessary.

Can sore ears be caused by wax build-up?

Yes — if your ears feel itchy, achey or tender, it could be caused by a build-up of wax pressing on the ear canal. In most cases, professional wax removal can help relieve this discomfort.

Is it normal to have sore ears after wax removal?

This is rare, but can happen if a large amount of wax is removed or if your ear canals are sensitive. Any post-treatment soreness is usually mild and settles within 24–48 hours, often eased with over-the-counter pain relief.
If pain worsens or persists, we recommend checking with your GP to rule out infection.

My ears still feel blocked after wax removal – is that normal?

Yes — it's not unusual to feel like your ears are still blocked for a day or two after treatment, especially if the wax was deep or compacted.
If the blocked sensation continues beyond 3–5 days, please get in touch so we can advise or review your ears.
